Focus Verse: 1 Samuel 15:22
“And Samuel said, 'Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in
obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen,
than the fat of rams.”
Reflection:
This passage from 1 Samuel really resonated with me as I could relate to Saul who only
cared about what his idea of what God’s commands were, instead of focusing on really
listening to God’s voice for guidance. As the commentary from Living Life mentions, we
often get too wrapped up into the question of “What am I doing?” versus “Who am I
becoming?” God wants us to first and foremost sit at His feet, listening in obedience.
Instead, I often find myself stressing about how much (or how little) I am physically
serving the church or doing other acts of service I feel are righteous. These days I feel
that God is really teaching me to actively fight against the pride that comes with
focusing too much on the doing rather than the being. I am striving to really embrace
being His daughter who listens to His Spirit for discernment in all areas of life.
One of the first things people may learn about me is my love for plants. I was inspired
to draw this picture illustrating the simplicity and necessity of just sitting at Jesus’ feet
(“soaking in the Son” if you will). Like this plant, we can be still as we turn our ears to
His voice which will produce growth and true obedience.
