Jan 15, Matthew 2: 13-23, by Christie

Summary: Herod is searching for Jesus to kill him, and later orders all the boys in and near Bethlehem to be killed. Joseph obeys the call of an angel of the Lord and escapes to Egypt and then to Nazareth, fulfilling what the Lord had said through prophets.

Focus Verse: 21 “So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel”

Reflection: A common phrase we hear as Christians is “God has a plan for you.” This phrase is heard especially during times of hardship to comfort one another. We know that God is good and His plans are good. However, it’s easy to say it without really realizing what it fully entails. Through today’s verses, we see that God indeed has a plan for us. He also offers us guidance and protection so that we see His plan fulfilled. Joseph was told to get up and go to Egypt, and so he got up and went. As a result of Joseph's obedience, we see that Jesus is safe from Herod. The Old Testament prophecies are also fulfilled, showing that God follows through with His promises. I am reminded to pray and listen to God, for He is there, waiting to guide and protect us through it all.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for your goodness and faithfulness. You are sovereign through it all and you fulfill all Your promises. I know many times we get distracted with things happening in our lives, but I pray that we may refocus on You and be led by Your Word. Open up our hearts and minds, so that we may listen and be obedient to your calling. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
