Jan 6, 1 John 4: 1-12 by Kyu

Summary: In this passage, John explains how we can recognize if a Spirit is from God or not. He also explains how we can know God even through we do not see him.

Focus Verse: 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another

Reflection:

This passage is packed with so many important points that it is hard to pick one verse to focus on. John makes it very clear that we cannot claim to know God if we do not love one another. This is the same message that Jesus gave at the last supper in saying “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” However, John also reminds me that we ought to love those who are not so lovable or as someone put it---” in need of extra Grace.” As Jesus said “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?” These are very clear concepts and commandment that Jesus has given us but often challenging to actually carry out. Verse 11 however reminds me that our love for others should not come just from our own effort, sense of our own goodness, or expectation of the love returned. Rather, our love for others should be in response to understanding and thanksgiving for how God loved us even when we did not love him.

Prayer: Lord, I lift up and praise your name for the Grace you have given us through Jesus Christ. I give you thanks for loving us not because we are righteous but because you are faithful and loving despite our failures, weaknesses, and indifferences. Help us to respond to your love by imitating your unconditional love to our neighbors that they may know you and give you praise.
